Swami Niranjan talked on the occasion of Guru Pournima, on 30th July 2007 in Bangalore. He focused on the effects of Yoga on Mind.

Mind is very difficult to control; if one tries to overpower it then he is surely going to lose the battle. Mind is a very strong force and one needs to be careful while dealing with it. The best way is to be friends with it and not to fight.

Swami Niranjan told a very beautiful story of a 4 horses and the trainer.

Once there were 4 beautiful horses gifted to a King. He liked all of them. But the horses were wild, and it was not possible for anyone to control them. Many experts tried to put a bridle and saddle on these horses but they failed. Finally the king announced very high prize money for the one who can control the horses. But no one could do it. Finally a man came to see the king and asked for 1 years time. He said that he would take the horses and only come back after 1 year. The King agreed and sent the horses with him.

After 1 year, the man came back and he was riding these 4 beautiful horses. Everyone was surprised with this master act. The King gave the prize money to this young man and asked how he could manage it. The man replied, "I tried to live like the horses. I tried to do everything with the horses. When they ate, I ate my food with them. When they drank, I drank water with them. When they rested, I rested along side them. Initially they did not like my presence, but after a while they got used to it. I tried to touch them, they did not like it initially but eventually they got used to it. Then I tried to put the saddle on them and they did not like it but eventually they got used to it. Then I tried to sit on them, they did not like it but got used it. Eventually I could ride them and they also enjoyed."

These 4 horses are 4 faculties of the mind, and they are thought - counter thought, intellect, ego and memory. When you try to control them they never like it but if you try to be friends with them then you can master and direct them.

Yoga is a powerful way to be friend with your mind and master it.
